The Thorofare
This is an adventure tracking site named after The Thorofare region of Yellowstone
National Park and utilizing the Spot GPS, Google Maps, Google
Maps Reverse Geocode, Twitter, the altitude api from ws.geonames.org, and
the NOAA weather Service. The main slider and AJAX functionality for the form are powered by JQuery. The
Spot mapping service only keeps 7 days of gps points, so Google Maps was incorporated to show all points from a given trip
regardless of the
timeframe by storing
the Spot generated gps points in a My/SQL database.
You can click on any of the points on the map to see the date, time, approximate location determined by reverse geocoding
the latitude/logitude, the approximate altitude, and the weather at the location at
the time of the Spot.
Use
the Google Maps zoom features to see
specific locations of any Spot or in situations where the Spots overlap each other when zoomed out. When zoomed in the
satellite images provide another interesting perspective.
Begin by selecting the trip from the dropdown. Trips will only show up in the dropdown on or after their begin date.
You can also see ALL points from ALL trips, by clicking on "Larger Map of ALL Points".
